WEEKEND AWAY: PIERRE'S, LAUNCESTON

Even though I wasn't feeling 100%, I completely and thoroughly enjoyed eating at Pierre's. We popped in for lunch and had the smoked salmon. It was a much more generous portion size than anticipated, which negated the need for the side of chips and mayonnaise we ordered. However, once you try these chips, you can't help but polish them off - and we did. These were old-school, chunky, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

We ended up going back for dinner that same night and decided to have the Taste of Pierre's - three courses for $60. The entrée was baked escargot - now I've never eaten escargot before. I've been to Paris twice now but never partaken. I wasn't sure whether or not I'd enjoy them, but I did. The texture and taste was perfect.

The main was steak tartare -which I have had once before, but not the traditional version. I've had a version with a Japanese twist before (which was mind-blowingly good) - and this was some serious competition. I have to admit, I always think of that episode of Mr Bean when I see steak tartare on the menu and I almost want to reassure the waiters that I do actually know that I'm going to be getting raw meat when I order it. But I didn't. I just ordered it and ate it all up like a good girl. Damn it was good.

After all that, dessert arrived, a vanilla bean crème brulee with orange shortbread. Now, crème brulee is something I definitely have had a few times (and a few times in Paris nonetheless) and this one beat all of those hands down. Again the texture and taste were so above par it almost made me cry. I love that moment when you crack open the caramel toffee on top and it's such a nice contrast to the creamy-vanillery custard underneath. A tip: have a go at dipping the shortbread into the custard. Garn. Trust me on that one.

It has now become my "death row" meal. All I need to do now is break a law bad enough to get onto death row. Small, tiny, teeny hurdle to jump for this meal. Honest-to-goodness.

Overall, I don't think I'll be able to stop raving about Pierre's. Not only was the food incredible (and I think very reasonably priced considering the very very high quality) but the service was great too. Attentive but not too attentive, friendly but not patronisingly friendly (if you know what I mean).

If you fancy a lovely modern French bistro meal and you happen to be in Launceston, I think you should absolutely call into Pierre's - you won't regret it.

  1. You should have a crack at cooking some of that stuff when you're feeling better. Speaking of, it sounds like you've been crook for a while. Nothing serious I hope.

Anyway, I spent my sunday listening to TED talks and these two seemed right up your alley; being a photographer/instagramer/etc:

    1. Oooh, thanks for the links Alex - I'll have to check them out when I've finished reports and can have some more non-guilty internets time! I've had a stonking great flu for over a week, but on the mend now thanks to antibiotics. It's seriously the worst flu I've ever had. I can see that little kids and older people would really suffer if they got it.
